Transferring Radar Data from the Compaq to mred

This document explains how to transfer radar tomography and VRP data acquired with the Mala system from the Compaq computer to mred, a LINUX computer. The document describes a step-by-step procedure for transferring and archiving the radar data. In order to transfer data to mred, you must have an account on that system. See Lee Liberty to set-up a computer account.

Transferring the data requires several steps using several different computers. The data transfer starts by writing a zip disk. This zip disk is then used to move the data to another PC. Finally, the data is transfered from the zip disk to mred using an ftp program. The zip disk is one archive for the data. The data on mred will be archived in the future.

Before turning on the Compaq computer, connect the zip drive by connecting it to the PC card, and inserting the PC card into the slot on the right side of the computer. The zip drive and PC card should be on the counter in the computer room. Otherwise, ask Bill Clement or Mike Knoll where to find them. Also, connect the mouse to the far left port on the back of the Compaq. Turn on the zip drive by plugging it in. On the back of the zip drive are two switches. The switch labeled termination should be in the on position (down) and the switch labeled SCSI ID can be at either 5 or 6.

You can now turn on the Compaq. Start the session in Windows (option B) and press enter to pass the error messages. In Windows, check to see if a PC card icon appears in the bottom right corner of the screen by the clock, and if a zip drive icon appears on the desktop. If not, you need to shut down the computer and re-connect the zip drive. After verifying that the PC card and zip drive are working, put a zip disk in the drive. There should be extra zip disks with the other data in the box on the counter, otherwise, ask Mike Knoll or Bill Clement for a disk.

Open the My Computer icon on the desktop. Open the Ms-Dos_6 (D:) folder, then the Ramac2 folder. Select all of the profiles (labeled Prof) by clicking on the first profile, scrolling down to the last one, and holding down the shift key while clicking on the last one. In the edit menu, select copy, then double-click on the zip drive icon in the My Computer window to open the zip drive. Choose Paste from the edit menu to transfer the profiles to the zip disk. Open the zip disk icon to verify that all of the files have transferred to the disk. Briefly scroll through the profiles on the zip disk to see that all of them have transferred. If you are missing some, re-copy them from the Ramac2 folder, and paste them onto the zip disk. If all of the profiles are on the zip disk, eject it by pressing the button on the front of the drive. Do not delete anything from the Compaq.

Label the zip disk with the words "ORIGINAL DATA" and "borehole tomography," the site where you collected the data, the dates of acquisition, the borehole pair (the transmitter borehole first, then an arrow pointing to the receiver borehole), and the frequency of the antennas used. A sample of a label is shown below. You can now shut down the Compaq by opening the start menu and clicking on "shut down." Turn the Compaq off. To remove the PC card, press the black button with the arrow in the SCSI slot (the slot that the PC card is in). Unplug the zip drive, unhook the mouse from the Compaq, and put the Compaq back in its case.

Take the zip disk to the NEC Multisync computer by the door of the computer room. If you need to turn on the NEC computer, a window will appear asking for a password; just click cancel. Double-click on the WS_FTP 95 icon on the desktop to open it. In the window, the IP address should be 132.178.15.224 to send the files to the computer, mred. The Host Type field should be "Automatic detect." The Account and Comment fields can be blank. Enter your user name and password (remember, you need to have an account on mred) and click okay. On the remote system side of the screen (the right side), choose the data directory and create a new directory for the files. Use the well pair for the name of the new directory (example: b2b4). Double-click on the new directory to open it. On the local system side of the screen (the left side), select the D: drive (the zip drive) and select all of the profiles, again by clicking on the first profile, scrolling to the last profile, and clicking on it while holding the shift key. Make sure that binary is selected at the bottom of the screen to transfer the data, then select the right arrow to send the files to mred. Exit the FTP program by clicking the exit button on the bottom right of the window. Remove the zip disk by pressing the button on the front of the drive and place the disk with the other disks in the box on the counter.
