Jama Hamel My name is Jama Hamel, I am a senior in the Geology program with a Hydrology emphasis and am just starting the Civil Engineering program. I currently work for the Bureau of Reclamation, where I am in the Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) program, which basically means they pay for my schooling and I will have a permanent job when I get done. I work in the River and Reservoir Operations group. My duties include data quality control for both the AgriMet and Hydromet programs and surface water modeling with climate change.
AgriMet The AgriMet program is a series of 71 (and growing) weather stations in the Pacific Northwest Region that collect meteorological data (solar radiation, wind speed, gust and direction, relative humidity, temperature, dew point and wind run) are collected year round and compute evapotranspitation (ET). At each weather station . During the growing season, crop water use models are formulated to determine the amount of water being used by the plant at its current growth stage and with current weather conditions. I do most of the background work behind this program, including getting green-up dates for all the crops associated with each weather station.
Hydromet The Hydromet program has a few weather stations that measure temperature and precip, but mostly Hydromet is river and reservoir gauges that are used for forecasting and flood control. There are well over 200 hydromet sites in the Pacific Northwest that require maintenance and data quality control. This is my largest field work opportunity, and I love field work.
Surface Water Modeling For surface water modeling, I am working with Leslie Stillwater, a hydraulic engineer, using ModSim and RiverWare software on a variety of projects. We are analyzing historic precipitation and river flow data and trying to determine the effects of climate change on river flow in the Upper Snake and Boise River Basins.
Misc I have also done many misc jobs for various other departments, such as geology, ecology and environmental quality.
Kiddos I have three kids, Connor-5, Tori-3 and Jackson-6 months. Connor is in kindergarten this year, and is loving school. Tori started preschool and can't wait until she can go to Boise State. Jackson is almost crawling and can't wait to terrorize everything in his path.
