H.P. recieved his B.S. in physics at University of Washington, where he minored in geophysics and
worked with the glaciology group on mass balance studies on Blue Glacier in Olympic National Park
and Taylor Glacier in E. Antarctica, as well as avalanche studies in the Cascades. He recieved his
Ph.D. in Civil (Geotechnical) Engineering at University of Colorado at Boulder, where his research focused
on snow remote sensing and snow slope stability, which included field campaigns in W. Antarctica,
Devon Ice Cap, Switzerland, Alaska, and Colorado. He is currently the research chair for the
American Avalanche Association, a research affiliate with the Institue of Arctic and Alpine Research,
and a consultant for the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory.
